A beginner player would have a hard time tuning a bass guitar. The bass guitar’s sound is one of the reasons why it is very difficult to tune this guitar. It produces a low tone that leaves musicians bewildered whether it is in tune or not. This situation can be solved by constant practice. The more you use a bass guitar tuner, the easier it becomes. There is a different feel when the bass guitar is tuned properly and it can also give the right confidence for somebody who is just starting out.
Tuning a bass guitar starts from learning the basic of a 4 string electric bass guitar. The standard tuning of a bass guitar, E, A, D, G should be followed.
Locating the appropriate bass guitar tuner is the starting point of this process. A lot of music stores carry this item so finding one won’t be a problem. Tuning the bass guitar by ear is possible but such skill requires a lot of time. You may have a hard time identifying the notes since you are just new to playing the bass guitar.
Once you have your bass guitar tuner ready, hold it up to your bass guitar where you usually pluck the strings. Begin with the low E string, that is the thickest one and start plucking. Check with the bass guitar tuner if it is in tune. Since you are picking the “E” string, if it is in tune, the letter E would light up, if the other letters are the ones that lighted up, then the yielded results mean your strings are out of tune. If the light turns to the letter “F” then it means you need to tone down and vice versa if it points to the letter “D”.
The bass guitar tuner then indicates that the strings need to be adjusted. Tuning up means turning the e-string to the left and turn to the other side, if you want to tune down.
This process should also be done to the other strings. Check with the bass guitar tuner if the strings need to be toned up or toned down. Turn the tuning pegs slowly so the strings won’t break.
